Nintendo, PlayStation, GameBoy, Commodore, Sega or Atari, these are just some of the titles that enriched the beginnings of the video gaming industry. To some people, these platforms scream childhood nostalgia. To the younger generation, they’re all about discovering the beginning of video games.
No matter what category of people you belong to, the good news is that you can now enjoy some old school games on modern devices, without having to look for antique consoles on auction websites. Indeed, you can now play thousands of retro games on FireStick without even too much headache. This means you can enjoy your favorite games anytime, anywhere, with minimal setup.
What You Need to Play Retro Games on FireStick
Once again, you don’t need the original consoles. Instead, you’ll need an emulator, which is basically a piece of software that replicates the original operating system. Now, different emulators replicate different operating systems.
For example, you’ll find emulators for Nintendo, as well as emulators for Sega or Atari. Some emulators are more general. While not necessarily advertised to be an emulator, RetroArch allows replicating the operating systems of countless consoles, so it’s suitable for all kinds of gamers.
With RetroArch, you can switch between different systems seamlessly. It’s easy and free to download and install. Other than that, you need the game image, as well as the FireStick system. Having everything in one place simplifies the entire process.
Step 1: Install RetroArch
Go to the main screen in your FireStick and locate the find icon. It’s usually in the bottom left corner and looks like a magnifying glass. You’ll have the option to explore categories or just use the search bar. In the search bar, type RetroArch and it’ll pop up as a suggestion.
Tap the RetroArch tile in the apps and games menu, then choose to get it. You can also see on the screen that the software is free to install. Once downloaded, you’ll be able to open it by searching for it in your apps.
Step 2: Adjust the Settings
RetroArch allows you to customize everything in your menu. You can even customize the menu, so you can see the cores, games and favorites, nothing else. Most of these settings are available in the user interface selection.
Most people aren’t bothered about the menu and leave it as it is, by default. What’s more important is downloading cores. A core is an operating system. For example, if you want to emulate and play old Nintendo games, you’ll need to download the Nintendo core.
Here are the steps:
- Go to the main page and in the top main menu setting, you’ll find the option to load a core.
- If this is the first time you use RetroArch, you’ll see that there are no items. Therefore, you also have the option to download a core.
- Scroll through countless cores and pick the ones you want to install.
- Give them a minute or two to install. It depends on how many cores you select.
- Back to the main menu, find the option to import content.
- Go for a manual scan and find the default core option, which should be unspecified.
- Choose one of the emulators or cores you’ve downloaded, then start scanning it. The installation is complete.
The same final steps must be performed for all cores in order to import them into the app. Taking the time to set up each core properly will pay off when you start playing.
Step 3: Get Your Games
There are two different ways to add games to your FireStick system.
One of them implies having the original cartridges. You can then turn these cartridges into images on your computer. The process is technical and complicated, but it also fails sometimes. It’s a headache, so most people don’t bother with it.
The second option implies downloading your favorite games and their images from portals like Romspedia. Basically, you want a website or portal with a good reputation and original games, rather than problematic images. Luckily, this one gives you plenty of options.
Download your favorite games or ROMs (usually on a stick).

Step 4: Install Controllers
This step isn’t mandatory, but useful if you have controllers and you want to add them. Whether you have your childhood controllers or you could find some for sale online, they can definitely add to your overall gaming experience. Here are the steps:
- Go to the settings in your FireStick main screen.
- Find the option for controllers and Bluetooth devices.
- Scroll down to game controllers.
- Choose the option to add a controller.
- Your controller should be in pairing mode now.
- Select the controller once it appears and pair it.
Don’t worry if you don’t have any controllers, you’ll still be able to play your favorites.
Step 5: Play Your Favorites
Finally, once your games are up, load RetroArch and it will automatically load the core you’ve set as default. Choose the option to add games and scroll to the folder where you’ve put them. That’s why it’s important (and convenient) to have everything in one folder.
Find the game you want, load it and have fun.
Keep in mind that the experience might be slightly different from your old school memories. In other words, you’ll have some extra options in terms of audio or graphics. Settings are quite sophisticated and can seriously enhance your experience.
You can tweak these settings to match your preferences and get the most out of your retro gaming.
Bottom line, playing retro games on FireStick may sound like a technical concept, but it’s not. It doesn’t require any experience at all, but just a few steps and the right equipment and software for an amazing experience.
With a little patience and the resources, you can relive the magic of classic gaming on a modern device.
