The king of the super middleweight division, Canelo Alvarez, is back in action this weekend. The Mexican will put his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles on the line as he faces WBA no.1 mandatory challenger Edgar Berlanga. The fight will take place this Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The co-main event is also a title event as WBA “super” middleweight champion Ersilandy Lara faces off against former multi-weight world champion Danny Garcia.

Canelo’s former championship opponent, Caleb Plant, will also be in action as he goes against Trevor McCumby for the vacant WBA interim super middleweight title.

Main Event Preview

• Age: 34
• Height: 5′ 7″
• Reach: 70.5″
• Total fights: 65
• Record: 61-2-2 (39 KOs)

Canelo has been the undisputed super middleweight champion since defeating Caleb Plant for the IBF title in November 2021. However, he was recently stripped of the same title for failing to face the organization’s Mandatory challenger in July, opting for the WBA challenger Edgar Berlanga.

This will be Canelo’s eighth defense since winning the WBA (Super), The Ring, and vacant WBC super middleweight titles against Callum Smith in Dec 2020. He then added the WBO and IBF titles in his two next fights, against Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant, respectively.

His recent challengers have been Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, former champion Jermell Charlo, and Jaime Munguia.

Alvarez has 62 professional fights despite being only 34. His only losses are understandable, with the first coming against Floyd Mayweather back in 2013. His other one was a weight-change fight against Dmitry Bivol after he became undisputed.

Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) made waves when he won his first 16 professional bouts by first-round knockouts. However, in his last six bouts, he’s only managed one more knockout. This came in his last fight against Padraig McCrory in February of this year. The fight set him up as the no.1 WBA challenger at super-middleweight, which has earned him a shot at one of the greatest boxers in history.
