The Oscars are coming! While most years, the event has been all about the glam, glitz and g, amour, with the Harvey Weinstein controversy we might see a more low key affair this year. However, as a show that recognizes brilliance in film and the actors who make it all happen, it is bound to have something interesting! It is Hollywood afterall!
In this article we provide you lots of useful information about the OSCARS 90th Annual Academy Awards and also how to watch it Online and for Free.
This annual event organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a total of 24 different awards. This year’s event will be the 90th Academy Awards to appreciate the best films of 2017 and will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, L.A, California. Due to the recently completed Winter Olympics, the date has been pushed to March 4th, 2018.

Who are Some of the Big Winners in the Past?

There are quite a few different award shows around. You have the BAFTAs for example which is all about British Film. But the one prize any actors wants to win more than anything else is an Oscar. This is the most coveted award and there are very few double or triple threats around. Some of these truly exceptional actors are:
  • Tom Hanks – Tom has 2 Oscars even though he’s been nominated 5 times. His two wins are for the iconic Forest Gump and Philadelphia.
  • Robert De Niro – De Niro won one best actor Oscar for Raging Bull and a best supporting actor Oscar for his role in The Godfather: Part II.
  • Daniel Day-Lewis – one of the few actors with three Oscars under his belt. Lewis won best actor for Lincoln, My Left Foot and There Will be Blood.
On the Female side, there are two standouts that bear mentioning.
  • Meryl Streep – Probably the actor with the MOST nominations ever, Streep has a total of 21 nominations. She has won best actress for Sophie’s Choice and the Iron Lady. She also took home a best supporting actress for her role in Kramer vs. Kramer.
  • Hilary Swank – on the other side for the ladies, you have someone that has won each time she was nominated! Hilary won best actress for Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby.

What’s Happening this Year?

Jimmy Kimmel will once again be hosting this year which makes him the 1st person to host for two consecutive years since Billy Crystal. Crystal hosted way back in 1997/98 and since that point, they have gone through a multitude of different hosts.

Any Big Controversies?

Casey Affleck and his representatives have confirmed that he will not attend this year’s Academy Awards. Casey won the Best Actor Award last year in Manchester by the Sea. According to Oscar tradition, he was supposed to hand down the Best Actress Award for this year.
Unfortunately, Casey Affleck’s win was preceded by controversy. Two women who worked on his 2010 documentary I’m Still Here filed lawsuits against him for sexual harassment. Affleck though denied the allegations.
His move to decline attendance comes three months after sexual harassment lawsuits were directed towards Harvey Weinstein. This of course led to the now infamous #MeToo campaign. Affleck implies that he does not want to draw attention away from the performances of actresses in the category as the reason behind his move.

Watching the Oscars

OK, now that we’ve covered some of the history and things to look out for in the event, lets get into how you watch it! The first thing you need if you’re planning on streaming this online is a VPN.
A VPN lets you access the content wherever you are in the world and it gives you a secure connection that your ISP cannot spy on. This ensures that you do not need to worry about the always changing laws and regulations. With a VPN in place, what you stream is completely private.
When it comes to VPNs there are many different companies out there and to be honest I’ve tried quite a few over the years. The one that I always come back to is IPVanish. It has a host of different clients available regardless of your device and it is super easy to use! The best thing for you though is that we’ve negotiated a deal where all our readers get 57% off! Watching the Oscars on Kodi

One of the best and most versatile apps out there is definitely Kodi. It has add-ons for almost anything and everything and is really easy to use. When using Kodi though, make sure you’re using a VPN. While Kodi itself is 100% legit, some of it’s add-ons are not as pure so you really do need to protect yourself.
  • Halow Live TV – a great live TV add-on with Kodi, Halow is definitely worth checking out. We’ve got a simple install guide that you should review so that you can get it onto your system.
  • IPTV with Kodi – in addition to Halow, Kodi has a really innovative feature. You can incorporate IPTV lists directly into the app. Check out our guide for details on how this works. It’s really simple and easy to do.

Watching the Oscars on an Android Device

If you’ve got an Android box, a Smart TV or even a Firestick you might want to use a different app instead of Kodi for your live TV requirements. If that’s the case, check out some of the apps suggested below.
  • Live NetTV – Probably your best bet for watching the Oscar’s live is Live NetTV. This app has hundreds of different channels available and they are all nicely sorted into categories for you! In addition to our review, you can also check out instructions on installation by clicking the link.
  • Mobdro – Another app that is worth a look is Mobdro. This one is a bit more complicated to use as links are user submitted, but once you’ve got a handle on it, you won’t look back. Check out our review and install guide for more information on how it works.
  • Showbox – the final app in our list is ShowBox. While this app is a lot better at catchup TV and streaming Movies, its Live TV section should not be discounted. We’ve got an easy to follow guide on how to install it so click the link!
