The event will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with two title fights atop the card. The fight will be the culmination of the UFC international fight week.

In the co-main event, Brandon Moreno (21-6-2) puts his flyweight crown on the line for the first time in his second reign as champion. He takes on Alexandre Pantoja (25-5), who he lost to by decision in May 2018 – which at the time led to his release from the UFC. Robert Whittaker (25-6) will also be in action as he faces Dricus du Plessis (19-2).

Main UFC 290 Event Preview

Alexander Volkanovski

• Nationality: Australian
• Age: 34
• Height: 5′ 6″
• Reach: 71″
• Total fights: 27
• Record: 27-2-0 (12 KOs)

Alexander Volkanovski is ranked no.2 in UFC’s men’s pound-for-pound rankings, having only been displaced from the top spot by the return of Jon Jones. The Australian began his professional MMA career in 2012 and quickly made a name for himself with his aggressive fighting style, powerful striking, and strong wrestling skills. In 2016, he made his UFC debut, defeating Yusuke Kasuya via second-round TKO. He then followed this up with 6 straight wins, which earned him a title shot.

In December 2019, Volkanovski took on Max Holloway for the UFC Featherweight Championship at UFC 245 and won via unanimous decision. He then successfully defended it at UFC 251 in July 2020. He followed this up with defenses against Brian Ortega and Jung Chan-sung, before defeating Max Holloway for the third time. Volkanovski then decided to move up to lightweight to challenge Islam Makhachev for the title at UFC 284 in Feb this year. However, he lost the fight and is now back at featherweight to defend his title for the fifth time. A victory will probably be enough to push him above Max Holloway and Jose Aldo as the best 145-pound fighter in UFC history.

Yair Rodriguez

• Nationality: Mexican
• Age: 30
• Height: 5′ 11″
• Reach: 71″
• Total fights: 19

Rodriguez won his next five fights but lost to Frank Edgar via TKO at UFC 211 in 2017. In his next fight, he then faced the Korean Zombie (Chan Sung Jung) on November 10, 2018, at UFC Fight Night 139, and won via TKO. Since then, he has had three wins, 1 loss to Max Holoway, and 1NC. His last fight was against Josh Emmett at UFC 284 in February this year, which won him the interim UFC Featherweight Championship. He will now face the champion on Saturday.
